A full time, permanent role based in our Birmingham office.

The role

We need a paralegal to join our Birmingham based Private Client Team. Reporting to the Probate Managers, the work will be assisting with all aspects of estate administration including a mixture of drafting documents, preparation of Inheritance Tax (“IHT”) forms, applications for a Grant of Probate and Letters of Administration, drafting related documentation such as Variations and Appointments, preparing estate accounts, and administrative fee earning work.

Specifics of these are shown below:

  • Collating and obtaining the relevant details to prepare the estate IHT returns and preparing first-draft forms for fee earner review.
  • Preparing Legal Statements and their equivalent paper forms to enable applications for a Grant of Probate
  • Correspondence with the Probate Registry and HMRC
  • Correspondence with institutions to obtain relevant details for IHT, Income Tax, and realising or transferring assets.
  • Where appropriate, drafting appropriations, appointments, and variations as required.
  • Attend client meetings to take notes
  • Responsibility for running files under supervision of partners/fee earners.
  • Undertaking fee earning administrative work, including:
  • Other fee earning work as requested by the team such including assisting with fee earning work on files.

The person

You will be organised, able to prioritise work effectively, work under pressure and meet deadlines. You will have excellent attention to detail and team working skills, be keen, enthusiastic, with good written English and willing to take on challenges.

Ideally, you will have some experience in private client work, however, full training will be provided for the role and this will consist of training through courses and on the job training. In addition we will sponsor the successful candidate through any one of the following courses (depending on their preference):

  • The STEP Diploma; or
  • ILEX Legal Executive Law or Paralegal qualifications

Which of the above is most appropriate will depend on the qualifications of the successful candidate and their preferences for training. You will be expected to attend any form of training provided, undertake the course work and take and pass the exams in due course. This training is intended not just to enable the successful candidate to undertake the job effectively, but will also give him or her an opportunity to grow his / her knowledge, experience and to gain important qualifications so as to be able to enhance his or her career and will give them an opportunity to move it onto a higher level in future.
