The role
We are looking for a senior employment law solicitor to join our Employment, Pensions and Immigration NSL, based in our Birmingham office, working predominantly for employers in the health sector. You will be advising employers on a broad mix of contentious and non-contentious employment matters, as well as engaging in business development activity to promote the Firm’s practice. Advocacy experience is welcome.
The team
The Birmingham employment team works for a wide range of sectors predominantly covering commercial, health, higher education, sports and charities. We are part of the cross-office Employment, Pensions and Immigration NSL of 60 lawyers, supported by two professional support lawyers. The role will involve working closely with Partner, Jog Hundle, and Principal Associates Fiona Longden, Rebecca Harker-Smith and Joanna Burrows and our cross-office team of health employment lawyers.
The person
You will have 4+ years’ employment experience gained in a reputable firm/in-house with a substantive employment law practice. You will be required to deliver outstanding client service and will have a sound understanding of client’s requirements and have effective client relationship and client service skills. You will have strong technical competence and legal knowledge in employment law.
Skills and attributes required
It is likely that your background and experience will include:
- good academics for example a 2:1 degree or equivalent with good A levels or equivalent
- clear enthusiasm for employment law
- excellent written English for drafting purposes
- excellent presentational skills
- very good time and documentation management skills
- keen attention to detail.
- leading on Employment Tribunal matters and run cases with minimal supervision
- ability to supervise and assist junior lawyers
Previous experience of advising large employers in either the health sector or a comparable sector is desirable.

You will also be required to complete a self-declaration to assess your character and suitability.
Disclosure and barring service check and security clearance
This post is also subject to a satisfactory response from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) (to check for any previous criminal convictions) and, given the nature of the work-type, you may also be required to undergo national security vetting to SC level – the latter can be undertaken following commencement of employment.
