The role

We are looking for a construction solicitor to join our market-leading national construction practice.  This is a fantastic opportunity for you to advance your career at a top-ranked firm, within an established and top-rated team of 4 partners and 15+ lawyers.  The role is predominantly transactional, although associates keen to maintain a mix can be accommodated. With an excellent pipeline of work, and clear team structure, this is a great potential opportunity for the right associate to progress to progress  in seniority.

You will have the chance to work on complex and innovative projects across a range of sectors.  Our diverse client base includes central government departments, world leading universities, life sciences developers and institutional investors.

The role will be based in our Cambridge office where you will be able to work alongside real estate colleagues on high-profile-regional and national projects, including in the fast-growing ‘Golden Triangle’ of London, Oxford, and Cambridge.

You will have the opportunity to work with all of the major industry forms combined with an innovative use of AI technology to help with bespoke drafting.

You will enjoy working as part of a great team with excellent support from our executive assistants and regular training and updates from our construction team in-house senior legal advisor, Alison Garrett.  You will also play a role in our business development activities – including helping with our construction blogs (Blog | Construction | Mills & Reeve (mills-reeve.com), training seminars (in person and on-line) and thought leadership reports (Building towards net zero | Mills & Reeve (mills-reeve.com).

With supervision as appropriate, you will be given the opportunity to help with all of the work of the team, including:

  • Drafting amendments to the standard forms including the JCT and NEC suites
  • Ongoing project and wider strategic legal advice
  • Drafting consultant appointments, collateral warranties, parent company guarantees, bonds and other documents
  • Negotiating key construction terms
  • Assisting with substantial corporate, real estate and funding transactions

If you would like to work on construction disputes, we will also accommodate this.

Experience required

Ideally, you will be 2-6 PQE with experience in construction work gained during training and post qualification.

Pre-employment screening

Please note that, in the event that we make an offer for a role, we will conduct pre-employment screening that includes, but is not limited to, a basic DBS check, right to work check, any disciplinary history recorded with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and a self-declaration to assess your character and suitability for the role.  A full policy of the screening the firm undertakes is available on request.

Disclosure and barring service check and security clearance

This post is also subject to a satisfactory response from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) (to check for any previous criminal convictions and cautions) and, given the nature of the work-type, you may also be required to undergo national security vetting to SC level – the latter can be undertaken following commencement of employment.
